Levothyroxine at bedtime

Thyroid Medication

Can I take levothyroxine at bedtime?  Is it ok to take my dose of levothyroxine sodium at night?

This is a question we get in the pharmacy from time to time.  We usually tell people to take their thyroid dose first thing in the morning with a full glass of water on an empty stomach, but an evening dose seems to work just as well.

Many people like to eat first thing in the morning, or don’t like to take the medicine right away.  For those people, it does seem to work well to take their dose at night.  And, I’ve seen many people do well taking it at bedtime.

The most important thing is that you take your thyroid everyday and best on a empty stomach.  Taken with anything other than water can reduce the amount of thyroid your body get.

Always talk to your doctor before changing the way you use your thyroid medication.  And, be sure to contact a pharmacist if you have any questions about your medications.
