Is there a relation between HCTZ and gout? Can I use hydrochlorothiazide for treating high blood pressure if I have gout?
It is best to avoid HCTZ if you have a history of gout. Or if you develop gout while using the common diuretic – it would be worth a chat with your doctor to see if you should continue the common blood pressure medication.
Generally, the high uric acid levels that lead to gout symptoms can reduced with the medication allopurinol. It is interesting to note that buildup of uric acid in the body may have more to do with excessive carbohydrates specifically fructose than alcohol and meat. So, the diet we’ve be telling people with gout to follow may not be helping.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you believe HCTZ may be causing or worsening gout. Never change your diet without first consulting with your health care provider.
