Can you take Xanax [alprazolam] with Losartan? Is there an interaction between losartan potassium and alprazolam?
Xanax (and the generic alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine. It is a sedative that is often used to treat symptoms of anxiety and panic, sometimes it is used for sleep. Generally it is used sparingly, as daily use can lead to dependence and possibly addiction.
Losartan (sometimes also listed as losartan potassium) is a blood pressure medication. It is from a class know as ARBs. That class of medication works to relax blood vessels and that in turn lowers blood pressure. It may have effects on certain electrolytes like sodium and potassium.
This is no specific interaction between the two medications. However, they both reduce blood pressure. The effect of both medications could lower blood pressure too much, making one feel faint or dizziness. Hypotension (low blood pressure) can be dangerous if you are not prepared for it.
Many people do use the two medications together without incident, but when used together it is best to be mindful of the potential drop in blood pressure. If you at all uncertain about using the two medications be sure to speak with a healthcare provider.
