What Can I take with amoxicillin

Antibiotics, Drug Interactions

What over-the-counter medications can I take with amoxicillin?  Is it safe to use other medications with amoxicillin?

It is safe to use the standard pain, fever and cold symptom medications with amoxicillin.  Medications like acetaminophen [Tylenol], ibuprofen [Advil, Motrin], naproxen [Aleve] and cold preparations like Nyquil will not interact with the amoxicillin.

Medications that reduce stomach acid may reduce the amount of amoxicillin absorbed by the body.  Be sure to ask you pharmacist or doctor before using proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole [Prilosec], esomeprazole [Nexium], lansoprazole [Prevacid] or any others.

Prescription medications that should be avoided with amoxicillin include certain live vaccines, chloroquine and methotrexate.  Others may be used with caution.  Those include: warfarin, allopurinol, bupropion, estradiol, tramadol and many others.  Be sure your prescriber is aware of all your medications before they prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin.

Always contact a health care provider if you believe your are having side effects or a drug interaction.  And, feel free to ask me any medication related questions.
