Is there and interaction between Motrin and allopurinol?

Motrin (and the generic Ibuprofen) is a NSAID or non steroidal anti inflammatory drug. It is used to treat pain, inflammation and fever. Common side effects can include stomach upset, swelling and rash. long-term use may increase blood pressure and increase risk of heart attack and stroke.

Allopurinol reduces the amount of uric acid produced in the body. It is a Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor. It is used to prevent gout, prevent certain types of kidney stones and used in some cancer patients. Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, and rash. Contact your doctor if you develop a rash.

There is no major interaction between Motrin and ibuprofen that has been identified. NSAIDs like ibuprofen may be used to treat the pain from gout and other inflammatory pain. Most people tolerate short-term use of ibuprofen, however the risk of side effects increases the longer you take it. Talk with your healthcare provider if long- term use is suitable for you. Long-term use of NSAIDs may increase risk of cardiovascular events like stroke and heart attack, and may increase the risk of bleeding in the intestines and stomach.
