Is it ok to loratadine and cetirizine together? Are there side effects if taken at the same time? These are both second generation antihistamines or allergy medications.
Loratadine is a once a day non-drowsy allergy medication. Typically taken on a daily basis for allergies. It is sold in the US under the brand name Claritin.
Cetirizine is also a once a day allergy medicine. Generally does not cause drowsiness. It is sold in the US under the brand name Zyrtec.
Taking both is not recommended. It simply increased the chance of side effects. The mostly like side effects would be drowsiness, headache, dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. If you felt it is absolutely necessary to use both the best way to decrease the chance of intolerance would be to take one in the morning and the other one in the evening. Or, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options for treating allergies.
Even over-the-counter medications can cause problems when used incorrectly. If you are taking other medications or have health conditions that may restrict the use of certain medications I would encourage you to speak with a health care professional before starting any new medications.
I do hope this information is useful to you. If you have more questions for me, please ask. I’m happy to explain how medications work and other pharmacy related topics.
