Can I use Loratadine [Claritin] and Raitidine [Zantac] together?
Loratadine (and the brand name Claritin) blocks histamine in the body to reduce allergy symptoms. It specifically blocks the H1 receptor. It helps with allergy symptoms and is typically associated with less drowsiness than older antihistamines like Benadryl.
Ranitidine (and the brand name Zantac) is a H2 blocker. Typically blocking the histamine 2 receptor is used to reduce the production of stomach acid, however in certain cases your doctor may use it for allergic reactions.
There are no major drug interactions that have been identified between loratadine and ranitidine. In fact, some healthcare providers will use Claritin and Zantac together at the same time for severe allergies like hives. If you or a loved one is experiencing severe allergies be sure to follow up with a healthcare provider.
Always check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are uncertain about using medications together.
