Can I take famotidine and loratadine together? Is is ok to take Pepcid and Claritin for hives?
Famotidine (and the brand name Pepcid) is an acid reducer. It blocks the H2 receptor in the body, and that reduces the amount of stomach acid produced. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, constipation, diarrhea and long-term use may result in a vitamin B-12 deficiency.
Loratadine (and the brand name Claritin) is an allergy medication or antihistamine. It blocks the H1 receptor in the body and that reduce the effect of histamine in the body. Blocking histamine reduces allergy symptoms. Common side effects may include: dry mouth, headache, drowsiness and diarrhea.
There is no major interaction that has been identified between famotidine and loratadine. You may even have your healthcare provider recommend taking Claritin and Pepcid for hives. Pepcid is primary used for acid reduction, but can also reduce allergy symptoms. It is best to consult with a healthcare provider if you develop hives and determine the cause of the allergic reaction.
Always talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you are uncertain which medications you can safely use together. And, always be mindful of side effects.
