Is it ok to use allopurinol and folic acid together?
Allopurinol is medication that reduces the amount of uric acid in the body. It is use to prevent gout, prevent certain types of kidney stones and use in certain types of cancer patients. It is technically known as a Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor. Common side effects can include nausea, diarrhea and rash. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop a rash.
Folic Acid is a water soluble vitamin. Also known as Vitamin B9. It can be used to treat anemia and other conditions as determined by your doctor. Taking folic acid can change the color of the urine.
There is no interaction between allopurinol and folic acid. In fact, a small study showed folic acid can reduce uric acid levels. I would recommend talking to your doctor before adding folic acid to allopurinol. It is uncertain if the additional reduction in uric acid levels would prove beneficial.
Interactions and side effects can happen to anyone. Be sure to speak with a doctor or pharmacist if you feel you are having problems with medications or are uncertain which medications you cant use together.
