Are loratadine and desloratadine the same? What is the difference between the two allergy medications? They are both second generation antihistamines.
They differ only slightly. You could think of desloratadine as a purified version of loratadine. The molecule that makes up loratadine exists in a couple of different forms. It was found that the desloratadine form was the most active with fewer side effects.
They could be used interchangeably, however, some people do not tolerate the loratadine very well – but get good results with the desloratadine. Typically the desloratadine is more expensive and may still require a prescription in certain areas. I would encourage you to speak to your pharmacist or doctor if you are not sure which one you should use.
Controlling allergy symptoms can be difficult and frustrating. If you can’t seems to control the symptoms, I would urge you peak with your doctor and pharmacist. There are many different treatment options available both over-the-counter and with a prescription. Quality of life is certainly affected and it may be possible for you to get better control.
Loratadine is sold in the US under the brand name Claritin. And, desloratadine is under the brand name Clarinex.
As always, I hope you find this information useful. Please ask me a question if this did not completely satisfy your interest in theses allergy medications. Be sure to talk with your doctor before starting or stopping any medications.
