Is it ok to take escitalopram and loratadine together? Is the allergy medication Claritin safe to take with Lexapro?
Escitalopram (and the brand name Lexapro) is a SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is typically used to treat depression and anxiety. Side effects can include headache, dry mouth, dizziness, loss of appetite and constipation.
Loratadine (and the brand name Claritin) is an antihistamine or allergy medication. It blocks the H1 receptor in the body, which reduces the effect of histamine in the body. Blocking the effect of histamine reduces allergy symptoms. It typically has a low incidence of side effects with the most common being: drowsiness, headache, dry mouth and diarrhea.
There have been no major interactions noted between escitalopram and loratadine. It appears taking Lexapro and Claritin is safe for most people. Loratadine seems to be a very safe allergy medication and most people tolerate it very well. Even though no interaction has been identified, one should still watch for side effects of either medication.
Please contact a healthcare provider if you feel you may be experiencing side effects, or if you are unsure which medications you can safely take together.
